Band Practice

Band practice is a bad term really, as the vast majority of ‘practice’ is done at home alone. Band practice would be better termed band ‘direction’ as it is the time where the Pipe Major works to bring individual pipers together.
Monday band practice is for all band members to attend. Pipers and drummers are expected to turn up having spent at least an hour during the week practicing pieces of music and / or embellishments required by the Pipe Major.
Thursday band practice is designed to meet the abilities of the ‘more able’ piper and drummer where focus is given primarily to the development of music style / expression, repertoire building and enhancing with strathspeys, jigs, hornpipes and the like.
Saturday has a very different focus. The majority of the time is spent working one-to-one with the Pipe Major. Here direction is given on a more personal basis. If someone joins the band as a complete beginner, they would begin by attending one-to-one sessions with Pipe Major on a Saturday morning; then they progress on to the Monday night session; finally ending with attending the Thursday night in addition to the Monday night practice.
